Enter a novice, depart as a metal clay creator

Grasp all the basics of metal clay

This course is aimed at the novice student and will teach you a lot of the basic techniques needed for metal clay. It runs in the evening from 6.30pm - 9.00pm. Once you have done this course you can go on to do more advanced courses e.g. creating a hollow piece with a glass cabochon and create elements to embellish it or creating your own set of pan pipes.

Each week you will be asked to think about a design for the following week. The schedule for the course is as follows:

Week 1 - Making a simple pair of stud earrings. This will teach you how to solder on silver findings.

Week 2 - Making a mould and using it to create a pair of earrings or pendant.

Week 3 - Using a glass cabochon in a pendant. This will teach you how to allow for shrinkage with glass and how to secure glass in your design.

Week 4 - Using copper clay to make a pendant or earrings.

Week 5
- Using syringe to create an openwork or filigree pendant or earrings and setting a gemstone in it, if you choose.

Week 6 - Finishing everything off. If your are finished you can choose to make something incorporating some of the techniques you’ve learned.

Materials are not included in this course. You are able to purchase silver clay and other materials, such as extra clay, gems, ear wires/posts, jump rings, as you need them during your course. Costs vary depending on the amount of silver clay that you choose to use in your designs. Projects can be designed to suit everyone’s budget. As a guide, approximately, a small charm will cost £6-10 and a medium-sized pendant will cost £20. You can purchase weekly or at the end of the course.

You are welcome to bring your own supplies if you would prefer. If you bring silver clay, only fine silver PMC or Art Clay Silver can be used.
